Perennial Give Away

Openlands connected Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse to Elite Growers who have over 1,000 1 gallon  perennial plants they would like to donate to gardeners and community gardeners/public spaces. They will be deliverying the plants on Tuesday, October 13 anytime between 10 am - 10:30 am. To facilitate this we need your help!
 
Here are a few ways you could participate.
 
1. Help unload the truck when it arrives. Volunteers can come to Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse at 10 am to help prepare for the delivery, unload and sort the plants for distribution. Volunteers would be welcome from 10 am - Noon or later if you can.
 
2. Pick up plants! Do you have a space in need of a few plants. Are you working for a public garden that could plant them soon. Come and pick up some perennials for your gardens! People can pick up plants on Tuesday, October 13 from 1 pm - 5 pm.

Book Club - June 10

Join us for an evening of inspiration.  The first book in our reading series is Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard: A Universal Idea.  Our guest speaker will be Sarah Elizabeth Ippel from the The Academy for Global Citizenship.  Learn more about the school's own edible schoolyard and their connection to a school in Africa.  This is definitely an evening to chat, share ideas, scheme and dream.

To get you in that garden / cooking mood, here is a fab recipe from one of our community gardeners:

tabasco tickle  ®

90            Fresh Tabasco Chili Peppers                        fine diced

8         8    Cascabel Chili Peppers                        dried and ground

2             Chilpote’ Chili Peppers                                      “                        “

4          Pulla Chili Peppers                                “                    “

12            cloves fresh garlic                                    diced and crushed

 1.5c            Distilled Vinegar

  .5c            Rice Vinegar

 .25c           Dark Sesame Seed Oil

 .25c           Virgin Olive Oil

 .5tsp           Balsamic Vinegar

2tsp           Kosher Salt

2tsp           Cumin Seed                                              roasted then ground

2tsp           Coriander Seed                                         roasted then ground

2tsp           Fennel Seed                                            ground

25           Dry Sage Leaves                                          ground

 4           Sun Dried Tomatoes                                     fine diced or ground

 2           Star Anise                                                   ground

 

Use fresh chilies if available and fine dice. If only dried, grind to a fine powder.

Add to the oil and vinegar blend.  For the spices fresh grind whole seeds.

Note: Roast Coriander and Cumin whole in small fry pan till just smoking prior to grinding to increase flavor.  Fresh Herbs of course may be substituted

Final quantity is 3.5 cups in volume.  Can be stored at room temperature for 4-6 months or refrigerate after 3day minimum blending phase.

Welcome to the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse and Community Garden. We are a community of gardeners who volunteer our time to plant a bit of organic beauty on the northwest side of Chicago.

As our greenhouse and garden is organic, we don't use chemical fertilizers or weed killers - just lots of compost, perspiration and organic know-how. If you don't know anything about organic gardening or want to learn more, please join us. Become a fellow volunteer.

The greenhouse and garden is open to the public every Wednesday evening from 6-8pm and Saturday mornings from 10am - noon. Family activities are planned throughout the summer.
